    Played from Beta through...

Yea, my account is still active... too many good people over there to say goodbye too. Actually met several in real life and we still get together ever now and then.

I think AoC helped me kick the addiction, but I might log on every now and then to raid. Account will expire in July. Almost 4 complete years of playing the game. Ok... now that's depressing.

I tried it when they had this two-week free thing.

    I lasted 3 days.

Ugh. Awful and cartoony, I hated the battle-and user interfaces. And boring! And no design, no details.

I guess I'm a bit of an EQ II fangirl, but I just couldn't play it.

I am with you on this, I have actually played for 3 years, and also beta. I have met quite a few people that I play with in the guild in RL, and still also try to get together a few times a year. I have never been a person to spend tons of time on WoW, in fact I do not even have a 70, WoW to me got boring after level 40, I think the highest I have is a 52. I mostly stayed with the game due to RL friends and also people I have met in game. My acct actually expires this month, and it will stay that way. I have only logged onto WoW like twice in the past two months...

AoC will be my new addcition as long as they get performance issues fixed in the first few months.

I played WoW from Beta until about a year ago...just needed a break from it all. I had about 8 level 60's and 2 level 70's (4 Horde, 6 Alliance). So yes, I was heavily addicted. I was in a 'hardcore' raiding guild on Whisperwind and would consider myself a hardcore player. I loved WoW, and made numerous friends through the years. At the end, we were raiding Karazhan almost 6 days out of the week, which was too much for me to keep up with.

I realize with me being a 'hardcore' player, it might make me a minority in the guild. My problem is, once I set my mind to do something, I tend to over achieve.

So, depending on how good this game turns out...I might have a new addiction.

I got suckered into buying WoW since it said Warcraft on the box. I didn't realize it was an MMO, but I was hooked after 5 minutes of play time. I played from day 1 until about a month ago. I raided pretty much all the content as a Raid Leader and GM...finally quit as it was just too stressful, pretty much like having a part time job. I don't regret playing the game, nor do I miss it. Conan will definitely be a breath of fresh air from recent gaming experinces though.

I watched someone play it for about five minutes once. From what I read about it, WoW pretty much epitomizes everything I hate about MMOs into one nice, tidy package.

Very thoughtful of Blizzard to put everything I hate into one game. It's like going to Wal-Mart to get kicked repeatedly in the face.

WoW was not only a game it became an experiment. They have economists, psychologists, and sociologists on their design team. The game became bigger than ones and zeros and transcended peoples ever day lives.

The one thing that World of Warcraft did that I'm not sure any other will be able to do, is appeal to the masses. Over 10 million subscribers is just amazing for a PC game. You might not like it, but every game made after WoW hit the shelves has tried to emulate part of it while also trying to distance itself to make it unique.

Then why are you interested in AoC? If you strip away the graphics, combat system, and seige warfare, then AoC is basically no different than WoW. Sure AoC will have a different spin on questing, crafting and raiding, but it will all be basically the same concept. Sadly, if most of you didn't like WoW than I don't think you will enjoy AoC. probably the only thing that kept me from playing wow was the subscription vs guildwars.

by the time i was ready to make the switch to wow, AoC was on the horizon plus i had heard a few things about wow that concerned me mainly having to do with the grind it took to get to the endgame content but if aoc hadnt come out before the lich king expansion then i probably would have at least given it a whirl

my biggest beef with wow is this. Guildwars, an arguably free to play mmo (the expansions replace the subscription fee in my opinion) has had at least 2 major graphic updates since release. WoW still looks the same to me. Plus i really like character customization options which is another reason i chose AoC.

WoW, in my opinion is an unacheivable phenomenom in mmorpgs, Guildwars claimes 5 million but i think they are counting either accounts or just games sold and either way that number is off by at least 30% as i'm sure alot of people have more than one account and nearly everyone has bought more than one game.

Well, for me that doesn't hold true. Let me expand a bit on my previous answer. Keep in mind that I'm an illustrator and I draw mainly the human form. So how things "look" is a hugely important component in my enjoyment of a game.

My first mmo was EQ. I was hooked the minute I realised I could customize a character. Then the gameplay sucked me in and that was it. I played EQ until an IRL friend of mine who lives a few blocks away cajoled me into getting EQ II so we could play together. I was instantly smitten.

There's a...cleanness and sharpness to EQ II that I love. I love the character designs (not necessarily all of them, but...) and my bruiser was the first class that I felt I could *master*, not just play and enjoy. And I've done really well with her, if I do say so myself. Playing Streppoch taught me not only how to be a bruiser, but taught me how to play solo, with groups and in mmo's in general.

I have played Streppoch, my main, for 49 days and 8 hours since February 2006. That's REAL TIME time, total. I adore her and she will always be my one true mmo love.

EQ II has *details*. Lots of little details. And beautiful, realistic rendering of landscapes, buildings, surfaces, materials, etc. I love how it looks. I love how it plays.

I went over to WoW, like I said. I immediately noticed that the characters were terribly cartoony-looking, almost caricatures. The colours were garish and ghastly, and not in a good way. Okay, fine. Move on to the cemetery.

I found the landscape to be really basic, and not that immersive. The UI was awkward and not intuitive to me. Combat was clunky and I just didn't enjoy it.

And then there was the community. *shudder*. One of the things I love about EQ II (and Vanguard as well, I'm realising. Just started playing Vanguard about 2 months ago) is the community. Yeah, you've got a couple of dopes here and there, but that's inevitable. For the most part, it was an older player base with a sense of humour and I loved that.

It's true what you say, that when you strip a game of all the details, the mechanics and whatnot are the same. But that statement also defeats your concern, because it's those details that make or break a game and distinguish it from the others out there. Mmo's have a conventionality to them, but that's why I like them. I know what to expect and how to play, it's just adapting to the tweaks of a new game. So yes, of course all games are basically the same.

So far, AoC seems to have details that appeal to me, which is why I'm going to play it. Warhammer has things that appeal to me (gothy dark elf Witch elf melee class---w00t!), so I'm going to be playing that. WoW has nothing that appeals to me, so I don't play it.

Simple as that. After my lengthy reply. Razz

I see your point Evil, however, the free subscription is the very reason why I didn't play Guild Wars (played it in Beta). I find most of the free games have a less mature community than the games that charge. Also, you do realize AoC has 10 more levels to grind through than WoW does, right? I am hoping the quest system is really good in this game, because I do not want to have to grind out the final levels in this game like I had to in Dark Age of Camelot due to a piss poor quest system. Killing the same mobs over and over again day after day finally gave me nightmares.

I agree here...my wife was so proud of herself after jotting down the web address to some free pirate MMORPG she saw in a commercial and then I had to break her heart. There is still a price to playing a free MMORPG and it's either a time when you feel like your babysitting or playing lifeguard in a very shallow gene pool. I'll pay a few bucks to weed out the undesireables.

As far as content goes I never played GW so I cannot compare it to WoW.

I played GW for a little while, but I didn't really like it. Being a mainly solo-player, the "guild" should have tipped me off. Don't get me wrong---I will totally be grouping with you all (I hate PUG's) and not keeping to myself all the time, but the GW mechanic doesn't lend itself well to soloing like some other games do.

Now, character design---GW *rules* at that. The outfits are fantastic.

Clothes and character looks are really important to me---ever since I was a kid, I've been drawing fantasy characters and my favourite thing to draw about them was creating awesome-looking outfits (I wanted to work for "Heavy Metal" when I was a kid). So anything with creative or different clothing I really enjoy.

That's the one area where EQ II is sorely lacking, unfortunately.
