Power Supply Question- I found my specs on current and just (RESOLVED)

I'm Back - Thanks for all the help so far. Ok so here are the specs on my current power supply.
its 4.9 x 4.9 x 2.5 Inches or 125 x 125 x 63.5 mm

I see a few people have looked but not said anything. I am stuck on this one line in the text below, "STANDARD MICRO ATX FORM FACTOR."

I don't know if that means I can use the standard and micro or just micro form factor. Because when I look up power supplies for micro atx at most I see is 400 watts.

Also, is there such a way to provide power without having the power supply inside your computer? Like an external power supply, because I am not so sure I can upgrade to a better graphics card unless I can get away from the 270 watts I have currently.

I went to best buy because I had some pictures I took with my Digitial Camera. One guy thinks I should just take a standard ATX power supply.

Any tech advice would be great or should I just take my computer down to Best Buy and pay the $170 for a 650-700 watt power supply there plus $39 installation?

Not sure what size case you have but i think "most" of the power supplies on the market should fit your case. This is of course unless you have an extremely compact case or you try to cram the very biggest power supply in there.

Looks like your current psu is only 270 watts.

If you are upgrading your vid card you will need something much bigger. There should be documentaion on the vid card you want that tells you what the minimum suggested size power supply you should have.

Off the top of my head, i would say you should aim somewhere between 600 and 800 watts. This is just a guess because i don't really know which vid card you want.

Wait, i just saw your link to Newegg.........yes that psu you linked looks like it would work.

as long as you have a standard ATX case that PSU will work. Now buy it and be done.

is your computer a shuttle or something of the sort, is it a sff or small form factor

if this is the case you may have crazy issues fitting that graphics card in there as well

The PSU you are currently looking at:

So based on your current PSU dimensions, I'd say it would'nt fit or would be a very tight squeeze. Do you know what type of box you have? If you have a dell, gateway, or other, let me know the brand and model number. I'll look up the specs for ya.

Also along the same lines as Evil stated, micro's are a bit tricky... Post your case information along with all the other parts you will be using. This will allow us to see if you have the room. Not to mention the ability to disperse heat with a beafier PSU and Graphics card.

When you reply to a post you will get a row of icons...

Look for this one:

When you click it, it will ask you to browse for your picture on your computer. When you find it, click the Host It button. Once you've hosted it, it will show you a link to the picture (bottom one). Click copy.

Then click the button and paste the link in there.

That's all there is too it.

Is this a machine you bought pre-built? If so, where did you buy it from? Any background info would help out greatly.

Yes that power supply will run the video card and from the looks of it, the 8800 should fit in your case. Not the best PSU out there, but with a Micro you don't have many options.

I guess I need to get the wife on board with these upgrades... Maybe I should tell her the computer is iminent DOOM if we don't get a bigger case "Yeah honey see airflow... yeah airflow.
