Ok So here is my Delima, in all open RVR and often Scenario rvr she gets lagged out.. if we are going to play this game a while I need to address this.. so here is my problem..

    Rayves Computer is a:

    Shuttle Sn41g2V1
    1GB of ddr400 Ram
    Geforce 7800 GSOC AGP 4x
    AMD Athalon XP 2400+

So I am thinking of getting her a
Sapphire 8X AGP ATI Radeon HD3850 for about 130$
upgrade the ram to 2gb Say 50$
Could upgrade her Proc to 2800+ (limited by FSB of 333) for say 35-50

Do you think it is worth doing this total cost about 200$

Do you think she will see enough improvment to warrent this or should I start over with a new system for her altogether? At some point I need to get a new PS for this computer too lol her PS went TU, and I used a desktop PS that is sitting on her desk.. one of the hdd attached to her computer has bad sectors (the one with xp lol) so an XP rebuild has been in the works for a while lol..

New build. AGP just isn't going to cut it anymore...Also, RAM RAM RAM! Looks like that motherboard is over 5 years old, you need something that is PCI-Express for video and can take DDR2 for RAM. (I'm also a fan of Intel over AMD).

If money is tight, though, I'm not to sure you're going to see much improvement in WAR with your upgrades...though I could be wrong.

Im kind of in the same boat, my system is a little better than that one but not much. I have been going back and forth, upgrade componets or just start over. Since I have to upgrade cpu, motherboard, ram, video card, I"m just going to gut it and start fresh. I love AMD, so here is my future build, all from Newegg.com

    AMD phenom quad core= $160
MSI motherboard, with 8gig memory capacity, overclocker, probably will start with 4$170
As for the video card, I'm still undecided, ATI or Nvidea, hehe, guess it all depends on how much cash I got at the time )

Current Video is a 7800GTX, it does ok, but has hard time keeping up in RVR, I have tweaked everything and I can just barely not crash in RVR now, but I lag severly.

If you build new just dont skimp on memory or mothrboard and at least get a dual core processor, just my 2 cents ) good luck )

sugestions on Video cards would be helpful from my Hammer buddies Wink

Just a heads up that a lot of the games problems are server/coding side and not PC side. While that first system is def. old and could use an upgrade I am running the following and in large scale RVR I drop to 2-10fps at times.

    Amd 6000 dual core
    ASUS MSI-2n deluxe MB
4gigs of Mushkin heat shielded ram
    ATI radeon 4870 video card
    seagate sata drives

I can play COD4, Crysis, Bioshock Batllefield 2142, Fear, etc with no problems, War is just coded poorly. They have been working on it some seeing how the server did not crash as quick on the last few fort attempts. Not sure why they are having so much trouble but it is annoying at times. Anyway not seeing you do not need an upgrade (especially the first poster) but realize if it is strictly War giving that system problems your upgrades mentioned will not fix the issue much.

Just as NN said, WAR is poorly coded. It appears that anyone doing these epic Fortress keeps is likely to hit this 2fps wall. That lag during those keep sieges are nothing compared the lag you've yet to experience. Hell, we crashed the zone twice this weekend within a few hours of eachother.

But back to the original question, yeah...i would leave AGP if at all possible. Here's some of my experiences:

I was a fenboi of AMD until they started laggin behind so my current rig has the dual core E8400 while my son has the AMD Phenom 3cpu.
The E8400 still smokes it but the Phenom is respectable.

As for video, I have the 8800GT on my system while my son had the ATI8450.....which I wish I had. Love that card.

Motherboards....I did not have much success with the P45 chipset but my son has a Asus M3A and I, the 750i. I gave up on that chipset..it's very particular in my experience.

My OS Vista64, 4G RAM and still laggy to 1-2fps during those epic fortress sieges.

As I told someone..if they knew the solution on how to fix their shit, they would have already implemented it. Conclusion: they have no solution. cheers

    My system for reference:

    E6600 Core 2 Duo (2x 2.4GHz)
    4GB DDR2 RAM
    BFG 512MB 8800 GT Overclocked
19" reg screen monitor, so I run in 1280x1024

T3 Keep battles in the Lord Room, I only dropped from 60+fps to about 25-30 at the least.

For those running NVidia GPU's, be sure you make a profile for WAR.exe in your NVidia Control Panel, it helps BIG TIME!
    More things that help:

    • Use the BuffThrottle mod
    • Turn off Guild and Title names above everyone's heads
    • Change your spell effects to show only on Self
    • Turn off Grass and all Water Effects
    • Turn Shadows off if you need too

    850watt OCZ Power Supply

Personally Shuttle doesnt have great boards..stay away from them. Definitely get something with a PCI-E slot x16 or 2.0 either would be a upgrade. As far as video cards i've always said ATI's always had a superior video quality, but Nvidias were faster. JUST MY OPINION..lol calm down..Plus Ati's have had issues with drivers more so then Nvidia in the past. More games are coded for Nvidia then ATI..thats a fact. Chipsets on Motherboards are important as well. SiS= Seeped In Shiat.
Basically you really get what you pay for in computer equipment.
Side note: If you do upgrade dont forget about your power supply. These newer boards have connectors most "older" power supplies dont have, AS well as the video card.

    Rayve,

It's time to retire the old machine and build a new one. Even a moderate barebones at TigerDirect is going to give her more bang for the buck than any upgrade to a current machine.

As previously mentioned, the AGP bus is dead. New MB should support PCI Express 2.0.

Are you to going to put XP or Vista on the new system? If you plan on getting Vista, spend the extra couple of bucks and the 64-bit version. If you go with Vista, figure on 4GB of RAM, anything is a lesson in futility. If you are putting XP back on it, 3GB is the upper end of what XP will recognize and play nice with.

It doesn't matter if it's Intel or AMD, it's dual-core, or better, or stay at home. I have had a lot better luck with AMD cores than I have had with Intel, but that's me.

I have also had better luck with ATI based video cards than I have had with nVideo, even when MB has nVideo based support processors onboard. Again, that is my experience.

Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited by law. Dispose of unused portions in the proper receptacles.

Thanks for all the help guys.....Attius got sick of me getting twitterpainted everytime we do ORvR. It seems I get a might bit testy when I die repeatedly and do no good to anyone. And I'm usually so naturally effervescent. Suspect or not.
Anyway....guess it's time to take this machine out to the woods with a .357 and put it out of attius' misery. affraid
