    Mood Confused Need to buy a new Motherboard

    Ok, so I have an EVGA nForce 680i SLI mobo and atm I am just tired as hell of Nvidia and their consistent driver issues. I updated my SATA drivers to the newest ones and am bsod'ing about once an hour and I can't figure out how to fix them or roll them back. Seems like I am pretty much SoL from reading the various forums I check. I am tired of doing that anyway. Been doing it with their video cards for a while now and this board has been nothing but a pain in the ass. So anyone have a good idea for an Intel based board? Perferably a P45 northbridge set, and must be a cross fire ready board (f*ck SLI boards at this point). I have heard a lot of good things about the P45s.

    My rig:

    CPU: intel Q9650 3.0 Quad
    VC: Radion 4750 512 mb
    Mem: Corsair xtreme 4gb (1gbx4)
    HDs: 500gb and 300gb WD internal, 1T Mybook external.
    DVD/CD: Writer x 1ea

    I have been really happy with my Gigabyte board. It's only a P35 chipset but they do make several with the P45 chipset and all of them have good user ratings on Newegg.

    Wow Kahan. Just the opposite for me....sorta.

    I went from a Gigabyte P45 (returned) to a MSI Neo P45 (threw it in closet) and now am finally stable with a evga 750i.

    I'm not RAID-ing anything.

    Current specs:
    Antec 850W
    4G RAM
    Vista 64

    Running solid now.

    I believe the new Intel motherboards come out very soon. You could either wait for those boards to hit the shelves or get a great deal on a P45 type board. The only board I have seen that got some decent reviews was the Asus P5Q. Good luck though! Thumbs Up

    Could be that your running an ATI card on an nvidia board... Razz

    Happened with my 8800 GTS in there too. I thought that might have been it too. Put the Nvidia back in after installing the radeon and it still crapped out on me.

    So, I was getting a blue screen of death all weekend pretty regularly. i.e. once an hour....I don't have any critical items in my logs and I just don't see anything that would cause my crashes. When the computer reboots it tells me that it recovered from blah blah blah and I hit the nice little check for fixes and I get the following message...

    Of course that is complete bullshit. All my drivers are up to date and all my SATA hard drives work just fine. I moved them around, replugged all the cords, got new cords, switched them out. Nothing helped. Seems like the BSODs only come once every few hours now, but they are still there.

    Any ideas as to what it may be? My last recourse is to upgrade my PSU. Maybe the Q9650 and ATI radeon 4750 are too much for it. It's a 600w Coolmaster so it should be plenty, but who knows.

    Hey Kahan,

    I wouldnt discount the PS, even though PS's are rated high doesnt mean they are providing consistant power. Some are rated high because they can handle OR spike that high without burning out. One of the best but lesser known brands is sparkle (their PS's are rebranded, thermaltake has OEM'ed a few from them)

    I would first try another PS OR get a voltometer to test its input voltage and wattage. If you say its happening over a period of time (every hour) it sounds like this may be the root cause. If it was a driver, you would be hitting the dookie pile every few seconds/minutes instead of once an hour.

    I would also try disconnecting one of your internal drives and see if its truly a voltage issue. CD roms and hd's should be on thier own power connectors. However I think you mentioned it was SATA. sooo...

    Another thing to consider is how hot your PS is running during the time it starts having problems. As heat increases, voltage will drop and therefore cause unexpected problems. Please see the following from anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/showdoc.aspx?i=3021&p=6

    The thing to focus here on PS's is not its max rated output, I have had 400 watt PS's outperform 800 watt ps's at every voltage rating simply due to better internal efficiency.

    Something that I forgot to do this weekend was to test my memory. I was doing a memory dump every time I crashed. I have heard/read that sometimes it is helpful to reseat memory when installing new equipment. Guess I'll run memtest when I get home. Whatcha think? May that be a big enough issue to cause the crashes?

    are they matched pairs of memory? run a winmsd and email it to me, also, can you include your application/system event logs? i'd be happy to help troubleshoot

    I'm not convinced that it would be a memory issue, unless they were getting really hot, but again, if it was bad memory, you would have problems quite soon instead of hourly, it would be like every few seconds...

    Well, according to this PSU Calculator my system is pulling roughly 465W, and I believe that that is calculated under load. I had guesstimated 400W on my own. So one would think that my 600W Cooler Master is just perfect, but after reading up a bit on them, seems like a lot of the Cooler Masters are junk. Any ideas for a solid PSU for my 400-465W system load Nomad?

    Give me a little to look up some of the latest PSU's.

    The best way to get your logs is:
    Right click on my computer and click manage, then
    look for your application AND system event logs, export those and back
    them up. then reboot, this will refresh your logs. do whatever it is you do to reproduce the problem. Then export those logs after you reboot. This will give me an idea of what was going on before and after, if there are no definable events indicating its driver related (which i dont believe it is) then go get i8kfangui to get your hardware temperatures. Make sure you enable the sensor to detect your chipsets, memory, etc.

    If you want to know exactly how much power/wattage your rig is drawing, get Kill-a-watt. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882715001)

    EDIT: depending on your wallet, i'd check out these options, I personally like PC power and cooling

    For a PSU I currently have this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371009 and i have never been happier. Now its a little more then what you really need, but I have always been a big fan of Antec for their PSU's.

    Tried saving the logs to my c: drive and it is telling me "the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable". Can save it to my other drives fine. Just not the c: drive...mean my HD is going bad? /cry

    Ok, I just noticed in my first post that I said I had a 780i. I musta flubbed the keyboard, but I really have a 680i. After reading some forums I found out that the 680i had a problem with corrupting data. Supposedly they released a BIOS update that took care of this, but I don't know how many BIOS updates ago that was. I have never updated the BIOS till yesterday. So this may be an issue. I am running through a Memory Diagnostic Tool atm and I am through 2 sticks with no issues and 2 more to go. I am starting to think that I may have to reload the OS and hope that helps. That would really suck but oh well.

    Nomad, as soon as I finish the memdiag I will shoot you an e-mail containing the info you requested. I am also on MSN if you wanted to chat through there sometime this evening.
