I now need some help on parts....HOLE & NITE have already helped me pick out a few new parts

OS/ Got a new copy of Windows XP w/Free antivirus $80


Now i need some help and advice on the next step.......

Motherboard and CPU - look at Combos on newegg.com. They have good prices and you tend to get a better deal. I prefer to go with Intel these days as it seems easier to keep them cool. I've always had big problems with heat and AMD systems despite having massive fanage in my specially designed Thermaltake case. Of course maybe that is just because I'm so awesome at games I cause chips to overheat. Actually I bet it has something to do with how I have things arranged in the case or something else like but the my other explanation sounds better so I'm sticking with it.

With sound cards - Unless you are using this thing for your family room DVDs you don't need to buy the highest end thing out there. I've had many in the past and use my game PC for my music studio. I"ll tell you right now that most people won't tell the difference between onboard sound and a reasonable set of speakers and a super new creative labs audiophile in your pants with a reasonable set of speakers. So I would get something reasonably priced and not worry about getting the latest and greatest.

I have a sound blaster audigy 2 laying around that you can have for the cost of sendig it to you if you want it. I have no use for it at all, and I'm guessing it will serve the needs of a game box. It was at one time the high end, now it's probably nearer the low end of their line but as I stated above, I'd doubt if anyone can tell.

I may take you up on this if i decide to build a second box.....Currently i have 2 sound cards in my machine...but with all the upgrades i may think about building a second box...

As M7 said, get a good combo set that is in your price range. Check to see if it comes with a CPU fan. I bought a set online once and then had to run to my Fry's store to get a fan for my CPU. Make sure to check to see what it has for inputs for external devices. Most new ones might not have any ps2 or parallel ports. If you have an old keyboard you do not want to give up, make sure the motherboard has the correct input same thing with your printer. If it does not have a USB port, make sure you have a parallel port on the new motherboard. Same thing for your Mouse and monitor. You want to make sure your new motherboard will work with your current peripherals unless you want to replace them as well. If you have SATA hard drives make sure your motherboard will support them as well. I think most new ones do. I tend to not have any problems with over heating of motherboards. I don't go in and make any power tweaks though and make sure my system is well ventilated. Go for at least 2GB of RAM. Memory is still cheap. If you can afford 4GB, and the motherboard supports it(a new one should) go for it.

If you want to use your same old case, make sure it will work with your motherboard. I seem to almost always have to replace my case, but then again, I only upgrade my systems about every 5 years. Most cases are only $35 to $50 so it isn't too bad of a deal to gtet a new one.

Most of the peripheral problems you'll run into you can get cheap adapters for so I woudln't let it decide the mboard for you. But I'm going to guess most of your equipment is fairly up to date and will proably work just fine unless you have some really old stuff plugged in.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't windows only address up to 2 gig on a systme unless it's the 64 bit OS? I always get confused about that...

I have a similiar combo....that 780i might be overkill...imo the value just isnt there if you are not doing SLI/RAID/2 GIG LAN ports/

I have the 750i and the E8400..works like a champ.

Think these two were in a combo for like $352 so there is potential down the line to go sli or all tha mumbo jumbo you talk right>?

750i is also SLI rdy

I personnaly have, and like, this mobo and CPU. The CPU is probably out of your range, but the core 2 duo 3.0 or higher is just as good for most gaming. I did the whole EVGA SLI mobo thing the last time and had nothing but trouble. I have also fallen in love with the ATI VCs and there are just conflicts with trying to use those in an SLI board. Stay away from Nvidia in general I say. Looks like you made the right choice on the VC. ATI takes up half the space in my case and does twice the work. I have 2 4850s in my computer and they are ungodly. Just go to http://www.tomshardware.com/us/#redir and look at the benchmarks. My one 4850 runs circles around any of the 8800 nvidia vcs in SLI mode and the two 4850s do better than just about everything but the 4870s in CF.

Lucky you Kahan..I had nothing but trouble with the P45 chipset. I returned a Gigabyte P45 board even though I have had nothig but luv for them boards...was a sad day. QQ If you can get it working right, they are pretty nice though.

The EVGA board you had was the 650i/630i was it not? Some 600 series mobo?

No problems what-so-ever with this board. The biggest problem I had was trying to secure it to the mobo base in my case since it actually had to be screwed in to its own plate on the back side of the base. Meant I had to take the base out of the case, which is kinda a pain. Other then that, I had to reconfigure my boot sector to get it to recognize my HD and boot properly, and had to deal with Microsoft to validate my OS again because I changed so many things. All-in-all it took me about 3 hours to build it and configure it, but I was parting stuff out to build Aramahk's computer at the same time so no biggie.

Yeah, was a 650i. Honestly, it was a good board and had no problems as an initial build. It wasn't until I tried to upgrade the CPU and then the video card that I started having issues. It just didn't like being upgraded. Even doing a full wipe and reinstall of the OS, and flashing the BIOS really didn't help. I put the old CPU and VC back into it when I rebuilt it for Aramahk and it ran just fine.
