Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
Too many issues with Vista right now. I've got it installed on a laptop for testing purposes only. Being that XP64 wasn't widely adopted, it's the only real option for a 64 bit Windows OS.
If you want Windows 64 bit, I'd have to recommend it, but since most will be buying Vista 32 bit, you aren't gaining anything over XP except a shiny new interface and some very annoying security features. Now that's an oxymoron... Microsoft and security features.

You would also gain DirectX 10...but I can't say if that would be a good enough reason to move to Vista. I tried using Vista for about 15 minutes and then promptly uninstalled it. IMO, Vista is garbage. Microsoft has many more XP users than Vista, yet they are threatening to retire XP so more of those users will switch to Vista. Big, big mistake.
My vote goes for XP.
If more of these games were made to run on a MAC, I would switch over to Leopard in a heart beat.

There's no performance difference in the architecture between Home and Pro.
Vista is, without a doubt, complete garbage and DX10 doesn't offer that much to even make it worth the attempt at using it for AoC (or anything else, reasonably).
XP has been going strong as long as it has because it's the most solid OS to date, and capable of running any third-party prog without any hang-ups. I've been building rigs for the last 11 years, and have only gotten a BSoD I think about four times, and every time it was due to something related to hardware.
As long as you have a very capable GPU (i.e. a GTX or the like) and CPU (C2D) then you'll be able to run the game beautifully. The entire game is also scalable, the devs added an Advanced setting that allows you to literally adjust every setting, including all shadow settings, so gamers can have the best experience possible on various different rigs.

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
XP without a doubt. I'd like to try Vista, but everyone in my company that has adopted it has been either frustrated by the change, or baffled by some of the new architecture. Vista is a mess: the rule of thumb to live by is to never buy any new Microsoft software, or Apple hardware, until it's been out on the market at least two years.
Anyone who bought Windows 98, or an Apple Newton can back me up on that one. Vista may eventually be forced on us all, but don't willingly drink the Kool-Aid until it's forced down your throat, or they sugar-coat it enough to taste good.

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
Everyone says Vista is garbage but I have been running iot now for 2 months without a problem. Here is what I am running
AMD X2 6400
M2N32-SLI Delux Asus mobo
2 x 8800GT's
750GB HD
Vista 32bit
4gb of ram(even though not all recognized)
Now with SP1 coming out just a few weeks ago, a lot of the issues that people were having were fixed. DX 10 is deff worth it, if you played LOTRO with DX 9 and then made the upgrade like I did, its night and day.
Granted you have to have one kick ass computer to get the full effect of DX10 but if you do the upgrade for that alone is worth it.
When XP first came out again it was nothing but issues too, it took a while for those to get fixed, same thing with Vista. As we speak though Vista is easily becoming more and more stable, and most people I know have never had an issue with the switch.
Again I am a firm believer in Vista and like a lot of the new features. I am actually thinking about moving to the 64bit version though soon.

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
I just got Vista Ultimate 64 bit a couple months ago (64 bit was by mistake, but I bought an OEM copy for $100 so I kept it). Now that SP1 is out, there's only a couple software programs that I cannot use, but I really don't need them anyways because Vista has the same type of program included.
So far so good for me. At first I was not sure of it, but I love it now. Going back to my lap top and doing my homework on XP is a big change now.
DX10 is awesome. I could not believe the difference just from the few games I play from DX9.0c to DX10.
So I'm going on the side of Vista for AoC. Guess I'll see tonight how it runs.
My rig is:
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit
Intel C2D Wolfdale e8400 OC @ 3.6 GHz
ASUS P5N-E SLI
EVGA e-GeForce 8800GTX 768MB
GeIL 8 GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
NEC 24" 5ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor
COOLMAX 700W Power Supply
Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
WD 250 G HDD x 2 (one for OS and everyday stuff, one for my games)

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
vista 64 all the way and never looking back. the only game i miss is battlefield: vietnam
i guess i was lucky but i bought the software when i built my new rig and asked lots of compatibility questions etc and i must say other than the fact that it uses 1 of my 4 gigs of ram constantly (my ram never drops below 33% lol) I am very satisfied with it. My dual cores idle around 3% each and other than steam applications i have absolutely no problems at all. (steam and xfire/alttab during start up dont seem to get along atm)

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
*cough cough* I use Vista. pitty me. I actually have a dual boot system and use XP64 for my work but Vista is for gaming. It's a huge pain in the butt - i like the shiney new interface and since i paid for Vista Ultimate (fool that I am) I use Vista 32. Vista 64 wouldn't run with my 4 gig of ram - It's a known problem they tell me and the workaround? I swear it's true. The workaround to vista 64 not working was to install vista 32 instead. That from the support tech.
Go figure.

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
Vista 64-bit here. I can't stand XP. Anyone saying vista is to buggy either only tried it a year ago, or are two lazy to tweak it. If AoC has buggs (like most games do at launch) are you going to just give up? XP wasn't that smooth at launch either. Keep in mind that Microsoft is making a OS that operates using way more hardware and external devices then anyother OS. More things running off it, more problems you face. I honestly think microsoft is doing a great job with vista.

I chose Vista because I recently purchased a new rig and that's what I got. I run W2k on my other machines. I could have loaded W2k on this one bit figured I needed to bite the bullet sooner or later.

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
The problems with Vista over XP are too numerous to number... However, if you have the will and ability to work through them, Vista becomes a very decent operating system. Those who are running AMD chips and chipsets on their MB's don't encounter a lot of headaches that are Intel issues.
However with SP1 out and more and more companies making 64bit drivers, I don't think there is a reason to hold back from Vista any more. Especially if you are half way computer savvy. If you are a plug and play person, I would still way for a rebuild of Vista with SP2 included (it's coming trust me). This will work out many of the bugs that labeled Vista a failure.
If there is anything I've learned in the industry, is never go Microsoft until after SP2 is released.
Oh... I plan on loading V64 and will post my results. I've done a lot of research on my MB and chip set, so I'm hoping not to have too many issues.

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
I run Vista 32 bit here and love it. Very few problems since SP1. DX10 makes a huge difference if the game is tuned for it.
I am running 32 bit and I have a QX6700 Extreme Intel chip so it is a 64 bit chip. At the time Alienware was not supporting Vista 64bit....
So I am thinking of switching to 64bit but my concern is the support for it for games and such. Are most games now supported along with the hardware drivers?

Re: Vista or Xp for AOC???
Lord... 64 has stabilized a lot and all the hardware manufacturers have caught up on the 64 bit drivers. I'm sure there are things out there that wont run under 64, but most mainstream hardware and software should fair pretty well.
If you do install 64, you will need to install it with only 2g memory installed or it will hang. Once it is installed, you will need to install SP1. After SP1 is installed, you can go ahead and pop the remainder of your memory in.
