Building a new system, any thoughts? Empty Building a new system, any thoughts?

Post by Liathan Thu May 22, 2008 5:15 pm

So I, like many people are using this game as an excuse to upgrade my current system. Right now I'm running a dell and figured I'd give building a comp another shot (last time I did this the CPU never ran at the right speed).

So for this new build I was thinking of getting the following and then running Vista Home Premium 64 Bit.

    Case
    Motherboard
    CPU
    CPU Cooler
    Video Card
    Memory
    Hard Drive
    Optical Drive
    Power Supply

Any thoughts on how this would work together would be great.

Good solid components. The only suggestion I would make is in the hard drive area. I think you should have a 10k plus drive as your main drive (OS and Main Use Aps) then a regular larger drive for all the other junk.

The reason being is that your load times/access times will be much better on a small faster drive.

I'd recommend the 150gb Raptor or if you have money to spare the new 300gb Raptor.

If I may make a suggestion...

Since you are looking at OCed video cards...I would look at these:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125088
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127329

The Gigabyte one is my favorite. They are using their motherboard materials for this card, and they got away from the NVIDIA reference board design. Their video card has a small footprint and has a better layout, imo. They are also using better memory chips (Samsung) than the other companies. Plus...the heat sink is pretty kick ass. And most of all. It is cheaper than the XFX.

2 of those bad boys would be crazy.

Other than that...it looks like you are building quite a monster.

quad core, could take off tomorrow or a year from now. I bought a duel core, because that what I could afford. However I got a board that will support that when I can swing the money for a CPU of that size.
I have not heard anything bad about them, so if you got the money, go for it Very Happy

Just a tip. I have built 3 Vista 64bit computers this month, and Vista would not install with more than 2 gigs of ram on any of them. I had to install Vista with 2 gigs of ram then put the other 2 gigs in and it was fine.

I have read this is a common problem but these are the only 3 Vista 64 pc's I have personally built.

Looks like you are getting some nice parts.

Excellent choices. I think the Gigabyte @ 700 mhz is the best deal right now. Rebate and free game, nice! Though I never seem to get my rebates back.

Also, I think you should consider a Quad core. Future games will be optimized for Quads rather than Duo Core. So get a Q6600 and just overclock it to 3.0GHz. Make sure you get the G0 stepping. That is the newest version. Clubit guaruntees G0 stepping.

Also, get a nice Heatsink. The stock heatsink that comes with the processor usually sucks. I recommend the ZEROtherm Nirvana

Keep everything else the same and you'll have a kickass rig.

if you want to do yourself a favor, plan on replacing the fans, I dont know about that particular one but thermaltake is known for putting bad fans in their cases. As my boss put it, you get a better blow job with a 20 dollar whore.
