PC Clean up

Post by Peanut on Tue Apr 15, 2008 3:34 pm

A few steps to help your pc feel closer to new again. Gets rid of all the programs you have installed that add to your start-up time.

Increase startup time
Click Start
Click Run (type rum if on vista)
Once Run application is started type msconfig
Click Startup Tab
Click Disable All
Then check those that are important(Anti-Virus or GPU
applications), all else is just decreasing your startup time

Increase overall Performance
Follow the first three steps of Increase startup time
Click Services Tab
Click Hide All Microsoft Services
Then disable all and only re-enable Anti-virus and GPU apps

This stops stupid small things like itunes and punkbuster
from slowing your start-up when your not asking them to run. All the little things add up and can really
casue some slow down.

I will add ...

Google CCLeaner and run that puppy a few times. This is a free "crap cleaner" that dumps your Internet and windows cache folders. It also has a registry tweaker that works pretty well. I would also add to scan your systems for spyware as that is the single largest factor in pc slowness in my experience. I too, build, fix, upgrade pc's and stuff so feel free to hit me up with questions and the like.

Free spyware apps - Google it... Windows Defender, SpyBot, Ad-Aware
Free Anti Virus - AVG anti virus

ps - Hope I'm not breaking any rules here Smile

A couple weeks ago a program called Awola invaded my computer. Six hours later I eventually downloaded Spybot and it took care of it.. twas the most annoying infection I have ever experienced. Just hope you never get it, but if you do Spybot kills it. I usually use Ad-aware, but it had nothing on Awola. Neither did Spy Hunter, a program that was specifically advertising to kill Awola that i paid $29.99 for Sad

Noz, that's a perfect example of why you need 2 or 3 spyware app's when trying to rid your pc of spyware. One prog just doesn't do the trick. I run one over and over till it's clean. Then start up the next program... run it over and over ... and so on.

Just run Firefox, noscript, and a firewall... You'll never get those nasty little programs ever again unless you actually allow them.

Stay away from IE except for those one or two sites that make you use it. Then when you do use those sites, be very careful.
