Stuck between two video cards... Empty Stuck between two video cards...

Post by Kalvatar Fri May 09, 2008 8:07 pm

Ok, I am upgrading my comp for AoC, and I cannot decide between these two video cards.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130317

The first one is $80 cheaper than the latter, and all I know that is different is the amount of video memory on the card. My question is this, what kind of effect will the extra 320 mb do for my gaming, and if i were to go for the cheaper one, would I be looking at crummy fps? I really don't need 90 fps or anything, but i don't want to end up with 12...

If you are looking at those I would actually recommend the EVGA 8800GT Superclocked... much better bang for your buck

one thing is for sure, if you go for the larger one spend the extra 10-20 and get a g92

as far as i know the main factor that the memory controls is quality at a particular resolution, the 320s simply cannot display as much data at higher resolutions than the 640s

course i could be totally wrong so get more info here or google hard forums, they are good at that stuff

I really don't play in really high resolutions because my monitor isn't that large. If that is the main factor behind it, then i think i would stick with the 320...

This is some good reading regarding those cards you have chosen.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-8800-gts-512-mb,1743-14.html

8800Gts 512Mb is just slightly behind the 8800GTX which considering the price difference its well worth the money. But maybe that comparison since it has the 8800GTS 320, 640, 512. As well as the GT and GTX will help you out some.

That article was really helpful, and form the looks of it the 8800 gt is the best buy for me...$40 less than the 640 and it outpreforms it apparently.

Aye. I would suggest to anyone upgrading at this point to steer clear of the old 320/640 GTS's as they are outclassed dollar for dollar with today's 8800GT and GTS 512.

Good choice going with the 8800GT.

Yeah, looking at it now, my entire overhaul is less than if i had gone for the 640... and it will be better. Thanks a *ton* evildream, you just saved me a lot of frustration.

Seems like you made your mind up, but I'm seconding this. I have an 8800GT in my new rig, and it runs AoC quite beautifully. You can find them on Newegg for around $170 with rebates.

Budget of around 230 dollars for a graphics card. On newegg whats the best choice?
I am not all that sure because of all the different options. I also don't know what to look for in a card.

    Core clock
    Stream proccesors
    Memory clock

I dont know which is more important...
If someone would like to explain or tell me what card would run AoC at 1680 x 1050 that would be great. Looking for good performance, doesn't need to be as smooth as silk.
