    Sev's New AoC Rig

Post by Brandonius on Tue May 06, 2008 5:24 pm

So, after much thought regarding what to spend my $600 tax rebate on, I have deicded to be irresonsible and build a new gaming rig. I could pay off what little credit card debt I have, but where's the fun in that?
Plus, my system is 2+ years old and I am still rocking the Pentium D 805 and 2GB 533Mhz DDR2, not the latest and greatest by any stretch of the imagination.

Here is what I have come up with - Note: I have not included a Video Card at this time as I am going for an 8800 GTS which I cannot afford at the moment, that will be in a few weeks.

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53Ghz - The latest in Intel's 45nm processor line. I have been doing some reading and this thing will OC to 3.0Ghz on stock voltages and up to 4.1Ghz on 1.45V, not to shabby for a $130 Processor

Motherboard - ASUS P5K SE - Nothing special here, went with ASUS since I am certain that their newer boards will run the 45nm techonology with the latest BIOS

Memory - 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066 Mhz - Will probably OC to 1333Mhz since the board supports it.

PSU - Antec Neo Power 550 - Have always used Antec and never had a single issue, besides one DOA supply but the RMA with Newegg was quick and painless

OS - Windows XP Pro - No Vista for me...

And the usual other stuff, sweet looking Raidmax case...will post pictures when the build is complete. All in all should be just over $600 before the video card, which will proably run me about $200 unless I decide to go with the 9800GTX over the 8800GTS.

Aww, sorry to hear you wont be going with Vista. I was sceptical too till I tryed it. With SP1 it's pretty much bug free. Not to mention you'll be missing out on DX10.

Other than that though that looks like a pretty sharp rig. Congratz! Smile

I am still debating on whether or not to go with Vista. My roommate has a copy that he got from school that he said I can use, so I might give it a shot. Either way I will have enough room for a dual boot on my HDD so I may do both and see how Vista performs and how much better DX10 looks. I have worked in IT ever since I graduated high school and I am usually pretty skeptical when it comes to changing my OS.

Yeah, I am really stoked about the processor. This thing just came out a week ago and I have read nothing but good things about it. I could go for the E8500 but it's more expensive and with OC this one should come close to the same benchmarks as that one would stock.

I recently built a new rig, and I bought the E8400. It's a really great bargain at around $199.00. If you have the extra $60 I highly recommend you go for it. Only 0.16GHz slower than the E8500, and much cheaper.

Nice solid stuff, the only thing I might suggest is a beefier PSU. 550 will be a bit low if you decide to upgrade and go SLI down the road. It's a good unit and all, I'm just not sure how long it will last you.

I won't be going SLI, and if I do I will just upgrade to a 700w.
