    Governor Blago of Illinois

Post by m7_b5 on Tue Dec 09, 2008 2:07 pm

    Oompa Loompa Doom-pa-da-dee
What do you get when you sell a senate seat?
    Oompa Loompa Doom-pa-dee-do
A trip up the river for you and your crew

w00t. Personally I am glad they finally got this guy in the hot seat and hope he ends up behind bars. I never liked him or voted for him, I always thought he was crooked. On the upside in the last election he caused the largest return for green party voters from all of the Illinois democrats who didn't want to vote for him or the republican Judy Bar Topinka.

It is sad though that getting elected to office in Illinois greatly increases your chances of ending up in prison. 2nd governor in a row no less. At some point we need to just flush the system like the mechanic does to break fluid and start over with Illinois government.

We're taxed to the teeth and yet they can't find money this year in Chicago to plow the side streets. Not kidding. They are just not going to do it. FUN. A pack of cigarettes here costs $8.10. Yep. Sales tax is a bit over 10% now. Personally I don't know what else they could tax me for unless I have to pay an entertainment tax for each of my testicles. I'm sure that is already being worked on...

Unfortuantely, the old adage "Power corrupts" still remains true. The temptations are too great for most mortals and they succumb to them. In Illinois, and several other areas where corruption are ingrained in the local culture, rooting it out is going to Hurcelan task. Or will it be Diogenean?

Personally, I'll go back to my little holler and make sure that the ammo is topped off. (Just in case the survivalists were right and things are about to get really ugly.)

I really dislike Blago not only because he's a crook, but because he's such a smarmy, condescending prick. He talks like everybody is blind to the fact that he's so crooked. How about his recent "I need to work hard to make them love me again" speech. Jackass.

Mayor Daley may not be the most straight arrow, but at least you know where you stand. He still has political points in my book for the way he took out Meigs Field. It was all rich bastards from the loop in their private planes that lobbied and scuttled the deal in the senate. So was Daley in the right? Not exactly, but he got the job done. From Wikipedia:

"In 2001, a compromise was reached between Chicago, the State of Illinois, and others to keep the airport open for the next twenty-five years. However, the federal legislation component of the deal did not pass the United States Senate. In an illegal move on March 30, 2003, Mayor Daley ordered private crews to destroy the runway in the middle of the night, bulldozing large X-shaped gouges into the runway surface. The required notice was not given to the Federal Aviation Administration or the owners of airplanes tied down at the field, and as a result sixteen planes were left stranded at an airport with no operating runway, and an incoming flight was diverted. The stranded aircraft were later allowed to depart from Meigs' 3,000 foot (914 m) taxiway."

    Classic.

And as far as side streets go - what's new there? When there's an assload of snow dumped on the city, nobody plows sidestreets for weeks anyway. This has been happening forever, so I anticipate no difference. This is why I refuse to drive anything without AWD.

Yeah Dailey isn't all that terrible, at least from what we can tell. He's certainly smarter than Blago and I'm betting he's well enough insulated that the fall out from this will pass him by. I'm sure there will be a number of others that will go down as well in Blago's wake once he starts squeeling to the feds about anything and everything.

Personally this is going to provide me with quite a bit of personal entertainment for some time. I'm looking forward to sitting in front of the news tonight with some popcorn...

John Stewart loves governor / mayor scandals. I can't see how he won't feature this one.

Both of them glossed over it. As a Chicagoean, I was disappointed...I wanted more coverage!

Blago is a jerkweed, and it's hilarious how he's acting like nothing is wrong. Daley's an appropriate Chicago mayor though - rough and tumble and not at all afraid to get dirty. Not the best person in a position of power, but eh, he's fun to watch and the city's ticking along.

This is like the 4th governor in a row that's been in legal trouble I think, isn't it? We're not doing well.

ps. For all you Star Trek fans, Jeri Ryan was married to an Illinois congressman. The details of their divorce are...amazing.

Yeah it's cracking me up. I picture him sitting in his office trying to pretend like he's still got things to do and that the state congress isn't about to strip him of his powers. Given the nature of the allegations though I'm not at all surprised, at some point he's probably staying there out of spite. I'm sure if you asked him on the phone about the citizens of illinois he say something like "mother bleepers can get bleeped".
