    FPS help

Post by Orastes on Thu Jun 12, 2008 2:08 pm

I have been messing with every video option available in the game and am fairly convinced they don't affect performance at all.

Let me post my main computer specs before I go on much further:

Intel core duo 2.13 (can't overclock due to Dell being smartasses and locking the BIOS)
    EVGA Nvidia 8800GT OC'd to 700/1000
    4GB RAM
    Windows XP

When I first started the game it was on default settings which must be low, because the draw distance was super small. I got pretty choppy performance on this setting and I was bummed thinking I had upgraded graphics card and memory for no reason. I then clicked "High" settings and was like whoa! It was a whole new game. Weird, I thought.

It seems like every patch I lose a few FPS especially in or near Tortage. The last time I played I was getting 25-35FPS in Tortage and 35+ everywhere else. Only reaching 100+ in the cave south of the lighthouse. My question to you tech-minded souls is, our these FPS normal for a system of my caliber?

I know I don't have the best comp in the world, but I was hoping for at least 40+ everywhere, guess I will have to lower my standards if I want to play this game.

Oh, I did run 3dMark and got like 9600, not sure what that tells you.

The first tips I'll give are to select one of the default settings (low, medium, high) and don't mess with the slider bars. Then disable shadows and bloom. This should get you to a stable framerate on your system. If not just post with the changes it made, and also what resolution you are running in.

No shadows? Crying or Very sad Ok, thanks for the advice, I will try high settings and no shadows when I get home, hopefully I can find my Fraps and get a nice average FPS for you.

I have a AMD 6400 X2 Black edition not overclocked and the same video card as you except mine is only overclocked @ 650 with a shader overclock to match. I use EVGA's nice overclocking tool "forgot what it's called" but it's nice to have my fan speed and overclocks load at windows boot automaticly.

I am on high settings at a resolution of 1650X1150 and get FPS in the range of 25 - 45. Depending on area im usualy at 30-35ish.

FPS seem to be area spicific as in some area's I get up to 60 fps. I haven't played with seting yet but will report back if I can do anything that give's a increase but not take down quality.

I have read multiple times that turning shadows off will give you a instant 10-15 FPS boost but I haven't tried it yet because im almost happy with everything on.

Sux that you can't overclock your CPU because that is sure to gain you a small increase. I just recieved today 4 gig's of G-Skill ddr2 pc 1000 with I will use to overclock my cpu to around 3400 mhz. I'll make sure to report back if that gives me any FPS.

You may want to google up your MB and or bio's to see if someone made a custom bios that unlocks the OC features.

On a last note I currently get a 3d mark of 10,500 for a comparison.

    FPS

You've probably been doing this but I will mention it just in case because you said you were losing fps with each new patch. Defrag. AOC patches seem to fragment the drive like crazy. Slow disk accesses could slow you down enough to notice it in your framerate.

So, I finally got off Tortage! Yay!

On a darker note, I was experiencing the first graphic heavy area of the game. My FPS in the city are very random. Going as low as ~22 to up to high 30s in some spots. I also tried out Conall's Valley (spelling?) and was getting 30-40s.

This is by hitting "high settings", then completely disabling shadows. Sorry, I don't have any FPS to give you that are specific. I will try and come up with some averages using Fraps when I get home.

Hershey park time for now, catch ya later!

I have my card overclocked to 650 with shaders oced to match & GPU memory @ 975. In game I have everything on high except shadows are on charactors only with a shadow detal of medium and I am have a 40 avg fps. I drop as low as 30 when looking off a mountin or a busy village but for the most part 40-45 fps is what im getting.

I have played and played and this seems to be the perfect combo for me.
