the board you selected is for intel chips and but the processor you selected was an amd chip.

From what I remember XP won't recognize 4gb of ram unless you have XP 64 bit.

Yea that chip/MB combination just wont work. If you want an AMD chip let us know and we can suggest a board... If you like the board, then we can suggest a chip.

Also, are you using existing mats for you hard drives, cd rom drives, etc?

What do you guys suggest? I'm not dead set on these parts at all.

AMD/Intel I don't care. Jut interested in good compatiable parts for a good price.

Yeah for now I was going to use existing CD drives and Hard drives I have from existing computers, will upgrade in the future.

How does one aquire "XP 64 bit"?

also.. How do you rate that chip? good for the money or crap? something else better that you could suggest?

Yeah, the current idea is that intel CPUs are faster than AMD, Im not being a fanboy just talking about the current state of the high end CPU market. So whats your budget like?

I would be willing to splurge alittle on a good CPU just because its so important for performance. I would hope I could get a good CPU for 200 bucks? I know they can get pricey, and I don't need top of the line new , but a powerful one would be nice.

Aside from my CPU/motherboard does my other selections seem ok for a budget gaming pc?

you can get XP Pro 64 bit at newegg:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116378

AMD chips + mobos will cost you less than an intel chip + mobo, I think the newegg specials will usually save you $100 or so on AMD vs Intel.

for the most part right now Intel chips will out preform AMD chips, how much of a difference you yourself will see I cannot say.

right now your options are to get a high end duel core that starts around 3 ghz, or you can get a quad at 2.4 and then OC it up to around 3.0.

    quad: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

    duel: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037

I haven't spent too much time looking at AMD chips to say what their best two options are.

For $200 you can get an intel e8400 which is a 45nm processor, as liathon suggested. The nice thing about this is that they run super cool. Super cool means you can overclock them to 3.6 with no problems at all. I have one and am currently at 3.8 and stable and it never crosses the 47C mark, even when running stress tests.

Anyways, if you want to explore overclocking a bit its a great CPU. If thats the price range you want to go with a CPU you just need to decide the rest of your budget and if you want to SLI or crossfire.

Right now you can hit the highest benchmarks if you run with an SLI rig, however it will cost you. ATI is really going for the price/performance market, which is not to say you cant get great numbers with a crossfire rig.

Also, you just buy the 64bit version of XP instead of the 32bit version, its not difficult to find at all.

I like all the parts you have listed, but I would go with a Intel processor. IMO, AMD dropped the ball when it comes to multi-core processors. If you want quaranteed compatiblity, and performance, then stick with an Intel. The quad cores have really dropped in price, so you should be able to pick one up relatively cheap.

I am still a huge XP fan, and benchmarks have proven that XP is still the best gaming platform. If you REALLY have to have DirectX 10, then go with Vista 64. XP will only recognize 3.25 of the 4 gigs, but to me it wasn't a big deal. I was able to get 4 gig G-Skill ram from New Egg for $60, which is a drop in the bucket if you compare that to how much memory USED to be.

Once you build the system...download 3d Mark 06 and see if you can beat my single video card setup score of 12175. If you can, then you are golden Very Happy

    vs

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116204

I read some reviews about Vista and people say that SP1 is needed to get it running.. Is that what that 1st one is? w/ SP1 included

And will I be able to use DX10?

Hard drive - since I am going to have to get another OS to recognize my RAM i guess I might as well upgrade my HD

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073

GOing with the E8400 like acouple of you suggested

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037

Maybe a more then I would like to spend but does this Motherboard look ok? I would like the option to use SLI in the future.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813141005

and I guess the box I had picked out is fine(i'll deal with PSU later if its a problem)

the first one has SP1, the 2nd doesn't.

as for the HD, I think newegg has the exact same one but with a 32 MB cache instead fo the 16 for $5 more.

That's actually the board I was planning on getting so I'd have to say good choice.

As for the case, personally I'm a fan of full sized cases due to the room and better air flow imo.

Unless I missed it your going to also need a powersupply and a heatsink for that processor.

Also make sure to pick up some thermal Paste, Arctic Silver 5 I think is the norm.

    Heatsink-IF your aircooling
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019

Powersupply-This is what I picked up based on my research but you should look into it too.

    Arctic Silver 5

However, you should check out tomshardwarel.com and really do some of the reading into system building. I built my computer about 4 months ago and knowing that everything that is in there is exactly what I wanted is really rewarding. Also, that allows you an upgrade path.

I'm still iffy on if I'm going to buy an aftermarket cooler. I know a few years ago it was pretty much required as the stock heatsink+fan combos were horrible, everything that I've read now days says that you really don't need aftermarket unless you are going to push your machine to the brink. The case I'm buying is set to take thermaltakes new all in one bay mounted LCS so that's why I'm planning on waiting.

Your actually right, you dont need one for the e8400 at all. So unless you want to Overclock to 3.6+ - you can hit 4.2 aircooled with the e8400 - you dont need an aftermarket cooler or thermal compound.
