    Victim of AoC

Post by Lorahand on Sun May 18, 2008 9:28 pm

Well guys my comp that I just upgraded for this game fried tonight. I was playing and then the whole screen went multicolored and froze... when i tried to reboot the only thing that worked was my power supply.... the fan did not spin on the cpu, or on either of my graphics cards... and my hard drive from what i could tell did not come on either.

I am thinking I fried my Mobo, and if thats the case i am going to be doing one last upgrade to a Q6600 and Intel mobo and get away from this AMD....

Anyone have any thoughts on this problem... again the power supply turns on and one case fan comes on thats directly connected to the power supply....

Sorry for posting this in this section.... hopefully with a little help I will be back up and running Tues or Wed....

Sounds like the mobo. Still could be the PSU though, I have seen the fan spin up on a PSU but it didn't have enough juice to power everything up. I would try replacing it before going the mobo/cpu route. Just a thought.

Yeah i guess i would just be hard pressed to think PSU only because of how hot like the casing for the cpu was.... I am really bummed out... I don't want to send the mobo back either for warranty and wait 3weeks

Luckily i have a very old comp laying around that works for vent and internet... lol. Won't run AoC though not with 1gb mem and a ATI 9800xt Pro

Yeah, it wouldn't put money on it being the PSU, but it is possible and cheaper. I am in the habit of looking at the cheapest solution since I am tight ass.

I would be inclined to think its the psu before the mobo. PSU's especially no name brand PSU's are usaully the first to go. I fix computers as a side "hobby" and I've replaced more psu's then anything else. Even tho the fan is working it could still easily be the psu. Only way to know is to replace it. NewEgg has psu tester for like $5 but I know that doesn't do you any good right now... but they are handy to have around. Hope that helps

I have a local shop out here that will run a test on all components of the PC for $25 and I am probably doing that tomorrow. I know if i fried my Mobo there is a good possibility that my CPU fried... but hopefully not my Mem.

Oh and the other reason that I did not think PSU was because of the very distinct smell coming from my computer when it happened... cussing

    What i was running:

    AMD 6400 X2
    M2N32-SLI Delux Asus Mobo
    4gb of Mem
2x8800gt's (which were holding steady at 50C under full load)

Oh well we shall see.... i will keep you all updated and hopefully I will return close to the 20th... won't be back for early access though Sad

Try the PSU first, and make sure all your connections from there are secured and not burnt out, then look to the mobo/cpu.

I agree with some of the others...sounds like bad PSU.

Never ever eeeeeeeeevvvvvver buy a cheapass PSU. Those things fry they can take out other components with them. I know too many people it's happened to.

I have a local shop out here that will run a test on all components of the PC for $25 and I am probably doing that tomorrow. I know if i fried my Mobo there is a good possibility that my CPU fried... but hopefully not my Mem.

most likely the other way around (cpu fried the mobo) but we will see.

your stuff is new enough that both the mobo and processor should have shut down after a certain temp tripped, however thats often not fast enough to save you

Key factors that make me think this will be expensive: that distinct smell, if your tech enough it still makes you instantly cream your shorts but you get that sick "i've been raped" feeling in your stomach afterwards. The fact that on vent you said you couldnt keep your finger on your processor for more than 6 seconds means it was wayyy too hot(finger touch is always best when one doesnt have a 200$ infared temp taker handy) and that was after it quit running.

but therre is still hope that it could be cheep (not much but still) a new mobo will not turn on (aka fans running but no power to mobo) if it does not get a reading from the cpu fan. My own experience follows: I built a new pc and the fan i chose to use for my cpu did not have a 3pin cpu mobo connector. I thought, no worries i'll just plug it into a 4 pin and move on. Hit the power. all the lights come on and the fans are working but nothing else. After i paniced 3 times and had to be resussitated(spelling) by my dog i realized my mobo wanted to monitor my cpu fan and wasnt going to turn on without it.

Well I took it to teh shop this morning and first thing they did was check my PSU which was perfect... and the funny thing was when they plugged in my comp everything started working.... fans, cpu fan, gpu's and hard drive.... then after about 2mins came this high(to the point it hurt my ears) beeping/screeching. So they are looking at a few other things when I am at work, but so far it looks like its just the mobo and if thats the case I will have it up and running probably by tomorrow at the latest.

The smell deff made me feel like I "just got raped" by my computer. Luckily I have a backup comp taht will allow me into vent to chill and hang with everyone, and hopefully if I run into any questions while installing new parts someone may be able to help me. I am pretty tech savvy but I figured I would let this person I trust to teh diagnosing and I would replace what is wrong.

So it looks like it getting more and more expensive by the minute....

On to another note if it is the mobo, should I just buy a board for my AMD 6400 or do you think its worth me just upgrading to Intel board and the Q6600? I am looking at buying a board for my AMD with SLI with PCI express 2.0 that would cost about $180.... if I did the Intel way I am looking at about $360... would I see that much of an improvement???

Thanks for the help so far... now back to work(haha if ya call sitting on your ass work). Check this in a little while

my gut tells me, if you fried the mobo then the cpu is damaged, whether its opperational today or tomorrow or a month from now i still feel its damaged goods. (my former pc blew a gfx card and the cpu had never been the same since, it is currently regulated to a d/l machine / mame box / movie viewer / dvd burner)

also bear in mind that while a higher expense, the new mobo with the intel chip can be classified as an upgrade/fix whereeas the new mobo is just a fix

i think if its not a financial burden then you would rather upgrade.

Thats what I was thinking... its not really a financial burden for me to upgrade(thanks stimulus check) and fix. I would hate to replace just the mobo and have the cpu be bad down the road and be stuck with AMD(I love AMD but its time to move to Intel).

Do you think I will see a jump in performance with the Quad and Intel board? I actually have heard that SLI runs better with Intel, not sure if there is any truth to that statement or not.

Also Ash do you have any mobo's you might recommend for the Quad processor?

i have a policy about picking out parts for people but here are some

    cpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010340343+50001157+1389627502+1302825342+1051707842&Configurator=&Subcategory=343&description=&Ntk=&srchInDesc=

    mobo:

for the mobo, i reccomend you head to newegg and do an advanced search for exactly what you need (pci exptress 16 or pci e 2.0, do you need agp, what ram are you running, do you need hdmi, that type of stuff) without knowing any of that i cant get the mobo list down to less than 150 Smile. anyways get a search on and then paste the link here and someone who is good at that stuff can make a recoomendation.

    Couple Mobo's for opinions

    EVGA
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188024

    XFX
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813141005

    Asus
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131232

I think I am leading towards the Asus only due to cost, but my next pick would be the EVGA board. I don't see much of a diff except one is 790i and one is 750i.

    Suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated

Not that EVGA isn't a good product, but I had to return 2 of those MB because of quality control issues. I think EVGA should stick to video cards.

I ended up with the XFX one listed and have been very happy with it.

Alright cool... I am so thankful I have a Fry's Electronics store by me, where I can buy any computer part I need... its like nerd heaven lol!

So that is where I am heading afterwork, even if it costs me gas and $20 more, at least i can start installing and reinstalling windows, and hopefully be able to play when it goes live tomorrow...

Any suggestions on after market fans for keeping the comp cool? Especially with a quad and SLI running?

sorry if its been answered before (and i'll go look at the rig secion to be sure) but what case are you running?

make sure your gpu and cpu are getting fresh air from the outside

generally if your not overclocking, the standard crap that comes with the cpu (if it comes with it - mine did) is enough.

if it doesnt come with one then we can go from there but (and sorry to slight whomever had that turbo engine on theirs) weight can technically be an issue with heatsinks so you have to be careful there, most cpu's have a maximum heatsink weight and i wouldnt do more than double that, although i'm sure you can buy heatsinks that are 10x that and find people that tell you theirs is working just fine.

key elements for keeping a pc cool, lots of fresh air coming in and blowing out, the heatsink, and the method you use to mount the heatsink (lapping, paste etc) most of this wont come into play unless you overclock however.

just remember a clean pc case is a cool pc case (and by clean i refer to both wires and dust

I don't know the make of my case offhand right now... it came from Cyberpowerpc.com but don't remember the case choice. I can tell you this... nothing in the case is from them anymore everything has been upgraded.... including the mobo that just burned.

I do not do any kind of overclocking and have actually an extra three case fand with no wire clutter at all. I am deff a neat freak when it comes to the inside of my case, you would be hard pressed to find dust in it too.

So stock should be good then, I will look around tonight when I buy the stuff and see what aftermarkets are out there. If I find a few I will post up with my case and all and see what you guys think.

Thanks for all the help, I am sure I will be bugging you all on vent later if I have questions when installing the mobo or cpu. Also with doing this I will deff need to reinstall windows right? Or is there a way to get around that?

If you are just replacing the mobo, you don't need to reinstall windows. The only thing you'll need to do is install the mobo drivers.

Good luck. First time I booted up the game, my laptop switched off from overheating in 10min. Laptop cooler came in today and hopefully that is enough. Last couple of days I've been sitting on the floor with a well placed box fan keeping it cool.
