    SLI Empty SLI

Post by fulgora Thu May 15, 2008 10:51 pm

Hey all, I used a 8800 GT 512 mb during open beta and the game was simply gorgeous. I was wondering if you all think that going SLI will make much of a difference? I was thinking of adding another card but wasn't sure if it would be worth the price.

Seriously, $180 can buy a lot of beer and ribs.

honestly, it all comes down to whether you think its worth it. I can tell you that it will give you an improvement. That improvement is going to be anywhere from 40 to 80% depending on the application, as some scale better for SLI. I have personally owned several SLI systems, and I am currently building a new SLI system. In the end, it comes down to how badly you want that performance increase.

I have SLI and right now the game does not support SLI, so its not worth it. When it does I think it will be nice to have.
    I have (2) 8800 GTX's OC'd.

If you play enough games that support SLI then hell yes its worth it. I get crazy FPS with Crysis on full graphics at 1920.

    My 2 cents......

AoC will look good for you so save your money and upgrade when the new series of Nvidia cards come out middle to end of June-ish.

    That is my plan.

I run 2x8800 GTX's on my main rig and an Intel quadcore running at 3.2GHz. EQ2 (eg) runs slower, stutters more, on that rig in SLI mode than it does using one card.

EQ2 is NOT optimized for SLI, and NOT optimized for multi-core use. So, a single decent video card is enough to switch the bottleneck to cpu-bound. When you enable SLI, an additional burden is placed on the cpu trying to decide which video card to use, and so the game slows down.

I'd expect the same results for AoC at moderate screen sizes/resolutions, so I'd say stick with one card at least for a couple of weeks until we can get a read on things.

I'll be using a single 8800GT and a single Radeon HD2900XT until around June 1 - then I'll be back on the 2x8800 GTXs and can give a comparison.

If the game isn't supporting SLI right now, then I can't wait until it does because my FPS go up from an avg of 24-30 in Tortage day to 35-45 right now when I enable SLI. (Closed Beta)

ya i purchased 2x Geforce 8800 GT OC cards for my pc an SLI it for EQ2 an it basiclly ran the same as with just my old single 8800 GTX 320 card. i could put the setting on max but I would get 2 error messages saying I didnt have enough bytes an a crit error if i was in a high traffic area or sometimes flying, then the game would shut down. The only difference was it would shut down on a higher graphic setting than it would with my old card lol go figure, but man the graphics were awsome really good details.
