Lieutenant Norman E. Overfield is a native of Norfolk, Virginia. He enlisted in the Navy in May 1989 as a nuclear Machinist’s Mate. Over his twelve-year enlisted career he attained the rank of First Class Petty Officer, and was Board Eligible for Chief Petty Officer. He attended Basic Training, Nuclear Field “A” School and Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida, completed prototype and Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT) training at the S3G prototype in Saratoga Springs, New York.
From June 1991 to April 1994, Lieutenant Overfield served onboard USS ALBANY (SSN 753) home ported in Norfolk, Virginia. While onboard ALBANY, he made two Mediterranean/ Northern Atlantic Deployments, and qualified submarines and Leading ELT. After completing Radiological Controls Monitor School, Lieutenant Overfield transferred to the USS YELLOWSTONE (AD 41) stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. Lieutenant Overfield was accepted into the Enlisted Educational Advancement Program in December 1995, where he attended Tidewater Community College and earned an Associate of Science degree in Natural Science (Summa Cum Laude). From January 1998 to May 1998, Lieutenant Overfield served onboard USS NARWHAL (SSN 651), where he re-qualified submarines and was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning
Program.
Lieutenant Overfield attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia from August 1998 to May 2001, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (Magna Cum Laude), was the captain of the NROTC Hampton Roads Pistol Team, and earned his commission.
Following nuclear officer pipeline training and completion of the Submarine Officer Basic Course, Lieutenant Overfield reported to USS KENTUCKY (BLUE) in November 2002. During his thirty-one months onboard, he made four Strategic Deterrent Patrols and served as Chemistry/ Radiological Controls Assistant, Reactor Controls Assistant and Assistant Operations Officer.
In July 2005, Lieutenant Overfield reported for a one-year unaccompanied tour to COMUSNAVCENT, Bahrain, where he was the Coalition Logistics Officer for N4 - Logistics and Engineering. While stationed in Bahrain, LT Overfield applied for and was accepted for lateral transfer into the Engineering Duty Officer community.
LT Overfield reported to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and IMF - Bremerton in August 2006, after graduating Engineering Duty Officer School (Basic) with distinction. He served as the Deputy Nuclear Assistant Project Superintendent for the USS JOHN C. STENNIS FY 07 dPIA. His next duty assignment beginning September 2008 will be Student, Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, CA. While there, he will be pursuing a Master's in Mechanical Engineering with a Systems Engineering Certification.
He is entitled to wear the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), Good Conduct
Medal (three awards), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Expert Rifle and Expert Pistol Medals, Navy Rifle Excellence-In-Competition Badge (Gold), as well as various other unit and service awards.
Lieutenant Overfield is married to the former Elizabeth A. Holcomb of Milford, Michigan. They reside in Port Orchard, Washington with their three children, Matthew, Courtney, and Joshua.
