    Vista 64 w/ 8800 GTX Empty Vista 64 w/ 8800 GTX

Post by Probie Fri May 09, 2008 8:00 am

So after the big patch/update on the closed beta server I decided to try the different drivers. I first used the only certified driver 169 (something) from December of 2007. Everything was great maxed settings and I was was getting an average of 25.7-32.9 FPS through Tortage daytime and outside of the towns (Tortage and Old Tart[what ever it is!!]) 40-50 fps.

I then tried the 174.74 BETA driver... Couldn't even log into the character select screen. Took that one out.

Tried the 175.16 BETA Driver... that gave me around the same performance as the certified driver but resulted in a driver error aftre about 30 minuets of game play.

The best results (while it worked for me) was the 175.63 Beta Driver. Which was the newest one I could find through google and Guru3d.com. I had an average of 39-40 FPS in the Hub Cities. 52-65 FPS outside of the cities. The only draw back I could find was I received a driver error when I went into certain areas of the game. If I stayed out of these areas I had no issues at all and everything ran perfect.

Hell with the 175.63 driver the game said I was getting an average of 250 FPS (which I really am not sure if it is possible) in one of the single player instances. I was in this instance for over 1.5 hours and never dropped below 240 FPS.

I was wondering if anyone else was using 64 bit Vista and an 8XXX series card and what drivers they are using. Along with any trial and errors with the different drivers if they have so tried different drivers.

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to find the most enjoyable visual game experience I can get.

I'm using an 8800GTS 512mb KO Vista 64. And at first I started running through all the beta drivers. My average fps was about 25-30 when I would log in (post patch). It didn't matter which set I used my fps stayed about the same in and out of the major hubs. I switched then to the release version 169.25 and my fps shot up to 65-75 inside hubs old tort and the other 2 (names escape me atm). Outiside in the leveling areas i average about 75-80fps.

My settings are 1280x1024, AA 4x AF 16x and everything else maxed out. So I'm guess after seeing yours its really gonna be a trial and error for most people after looking at your results. Granted you have a gtx but at lower res's its not a huge difference between the 2.

8 series nvidia cards have really been hit or miss reading through all the forums. Some people are saying its great while others are just having a real difficult time.

So I logged into the closed beta for a bit last night messing around with the different drivers and tweaking settings again.. This time my FPS dropped big time. Didn't see that they had another patch to closed beta, but who knows. Maybe I'll try a lower resolution for a change. Currently at 1920 x 1200.

When I get time later I'll do more "hit and miss" on the drivers and post my results.
As for now... back to stinky diapers!

New BFG 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 (non-SLi); 24" Gateway LCD; 1920 x 1200 res., averaging 35-45 fps w/AA 4x medium setting on Open Beta, using beta driver # 175.16. Haven't tried any other drivers tho and I'm using rivatuner for fan control and what not. Note I replaced my old vid card with my current one. My old one was a MSI ATI Radeon RX 2600xt OC 512MB ddr4 that got an average 25-30 fps, so I have a definite improvement now.

I have a EVGA 8800 GTX KO. Using the the 169.44 driver that I downloaded right from the EVGA site. I have found the EVGA will post beta drivers after they find they feel they are solid. I have always had good luck with the divers they approve. I have never seen my fps below 40 in Conan even though I am I am sure it has been.

Well It seems (for me at least) that the best drivers are the 169.44 from
Evga. I get a few more FPS then the 169.25 in maxed settings.

I did get the best FPS (about 5-10 more) with the 175.63 from Guru3d.com, but every now and then I'd get a driver error and my PC would lock up.

With everything maxed I've been getting 35-42 FPS in towns and 50+ outside of towns with the Evga driver.

If I drop down to the medium settings I get an avg of 90 FPS everywhere. This is all on a 24 inch monitor @ 1920 x 1200 resolution.

I just installed the closed beta client on my Dell XPS 600 that has 2 nVidia 7950 GT KO's in SLI. That has a 20 inch Monitor @ 1650 x 1080. Going to see how that fairs this evening, this PC has XP Media Center 32 bit w/ only 2 G of ram.

Not even sure what drivers are on that thing as it's now my wife's PC.

    I'll post my findings!

    Vista 64 w/ 8800 GTX Vid_ca10

This is my current graphic setup. I was very pleased with my performance with the game. Aside from the normal beta issues, i had no problems.

Seems that everyone is puting a lot of focus on their fps numbers. I know that is the quick and dirty way to compare drivers but remember that image quality plays a big part in new drivers also. You may not see an increase in fps but you may see improved image quality and that is very improtant to a game like AoC......in my opinion.

I was targeting about 30 frames per second for AoC. Anything more than 40 really seams to be a waste of graphical horsepower. If i am running 50 or 60 frames per second i would rather trade those extra 20 or 30 fps for higher image quality. Use ingame settings to increase your anisotropic filtering, antialiasing settings, view distance, partical effects. Once all of the ingame settings are maxed out, move to the actual driver settings. You can do more tweaking with antialiasing, transparency, texture filtering quality, and so on.

So anyway....that being said, the 175.12 drivers worked like a charm for me. I'm looking forward to DX10 and i'm sure there will be a few new beta drivers to check out in the next week or so.

Hey guys I'm using the 169.25 aswell. I got between 40-60 in Tortage during the day, it was mostly in 60s but I noticed lag spikes where it would go down to low 40's for a second or two then jump back up.

During night time, I saw my fps go way up to like 120-144 fps in the underhalls standing still. Got about 90-110 while fighting and moving in there.

I set it to the high settings, the auto-default one, then went in and turned off shaders and bloom. It was on default resolution I believe. I'm not positive it increased the resolutiong when I selected the high video settings. What I also noticed was the lower my settings, the worse my FPS was. So on low settings, I was getting low 30s in Tortage during the day.

I'm running 2(sli) 8800gts 320mb in 1920x1200 at high detail settings with the last whql driver from beginning of the year. With the new closed beta last night I was running about 35+fps in the instanced night beach area and 25ish in the thirsty dog bar and outside night time city with fog in the city. Before the closed beta update I was running about 18fps everywhere. I'm not sure if they turned sli on, but if they did that would explain my increased performance. Perhaps they just optimized the graphics performance.

Downloaded and installed the 175.16 Evga release drivers last night. Didn't notice any changes in performance from the 169.44 that Evga had previously released.

Guess I'll stick with these for now unless something changes in the closed beta before release.
