Rave, in my opinion since I'm living near the DC area also. Live outside of the DC beltway. Seriously, less expensive the further you get out. We live in Reston, VA about 30min drive to DC and it's a little less expensive..heh..Notice I said a little.
Also, your best bet is to just buy a townhouse since you can get a bigger place for the same price as renting an appt because of all the foreclosures around there.
We managed to get a 320k house for 240k (4brs 3 1/2bth) in one of the best areas.

We're definitely going to look into buying a place, considering the housing situation right now, but it's hard since we're so far away. Still waiting to make sure he actually gets the job though--so tired of waiting!

We had to do that too when my husband first got his job in Chantilly. He was living in a hotel for 3wks while looking at houses for us then the FOUR of us lived in a hotel room for a week waiting to close on a house.
